“OD is a long range effort to improve an organization’s problem solving and renewal processes, particularly through more effective and collaborative management of organization culture – with specific emphasis on the culture of formal workteams – with the assistance of a change agent or catalyst and the use of the theory and technology of applied behavioural science…" Professor Warren Bennis
Most people believe their organisation could be improved. Many can identify some of the improvements that need to be made. Some can even tell you exactly how they think those improvements should be introduced into their directorate, work group, team or unit. They will be passionate, even angry about what needs to be done. But others will disagree with equal passion. The problem lies in seeing the real organisation in the midst of all these distinct views. The task of the OD specialist is to take a broad view of the organisation, in the light of its individual values, culture and strengths, and identify the root cause of problems and the need for change.
Some OD interventions will include suggestions for immediate solutions – for example, restructuring a senior management team, introducing better succession planning or performance review processes or conducting a training needs analysis. However, the experienced OD specialist will look at the organisation in terms of the relationships which make up its whole, and then trace any issues to their roots, which may affect many parts of the organisation.
Change can be difficult and challenging, and uncovering painful issues is in itself a painful process. OPS consultants will always exercise sensitivity and show respect to everyone involved. They will minimise the pain of change by ensuring everyone is on board and their strengths are recognised and utilised. They will also help maintain proper communication with everyone involved throughout the process.
OPS offer OD at several levels: 1 day Health Check, Team/Unit Development, and Change Agency/OD
